"The Carolina Parakeet once flew freely from southern New York to eastern Colorado. Carolina Parakeets were known to flock around dead or dying members of their species. Humans exploited this behavior to hunt them in large numbers. The last Carolina Parakeet died in 1918 in the same cage as the last Passenger Pigeon died in four years earlier. Every extinction is a tangled event and each one is a tragedy.
